Jérémie returns to his hometown of Saint-Martial to attend his former boss's funeral and stays a few days with the widow Martine. His presence angers her son Vincent, leading to a violent confrontation that ends with Jérémie killing Vincent. To cover up the crime, Jérémie receives unexpected help from the village priest, who provides him with a false alibi.
